Running Technique and GORE-TEX photo shoot

3 May

I do not consider myself a runner.

This past Monday and Tuesday I got booked to do a photo shoot for GORE-TEX in Rhode Island. When I talked to the photographer on the phone I asked “So, we are going to be getting some running shots?” he said “We are going to be getting ALL running shots”. I have never done a shoot that was ALL running, so I was not sure how my body would respond.

Let’s just say I am SO SORE. It is all in my calfs and my tibialis anterior (shins). It is not shin splints, it  just feels like tight muscles. I have been massaging myself and foam rolling,

We did some regular street running,

and we also did trail running.

The shoot was really focused on GORE shoes; Nike, Sauconmy, and Brooks. We got shots of wet, cold/dry and snowy terrain. (We had to spray down the deck to make it look wet, it was actually a beautiful sunny day!)

The snow was made from huge spools of cotton and then sprayed with water. People walking by thought it was real.

I also had to run though some watery mud with my Nike shoes to show how the GORE trail Nike shoes can really manage the outdoor elements.

This shoot made me really think about my running form, where I was landing and how I was holding my body. I started the shoot heel striking, which is fine and actually gets a great angle of the shoe for the camera. And then we switched to landing more on the mid area of my food. I had to really THINK about doing this as it did not come naturally. But as the shoot went on and by the second day it felt much easier!

Watch this short video on running form.

The photographer on the set,Trevor Brown, was really amazing. He knew how to catch my stride at the right time and he got really amazing shots. He never settled for “good”. I also met one of the founders of “The Most Informal Running Club Ever“, Alex. He was the male running model on the shoot! I learned about his running club and it seems awesome. So if you live in Boston, you have to check it out!

The pictures above were taken from iPhones. I will share the real picture when they come!

How is your running form? Do you have any advice? How do you land?

Under 15 minute interval detox!

Happy Friday! In honor of spring I decided to do a DETOX video. This will get you sweaty and help you start fresh for spring!

Elise from Lillybelle Foods came over to film and we actually ended up doing the workout TWICE because half way through the first time the memory card become “full”, and we didn’t realize that it had stopped recording!  (hence why we look so flustered!)

This is one huge reason why I wish I had a camera pro with me all the time!! Then I would not have to worry about recording and producing, just do the fun stuff like working out, sharing cool recipes with you and doing awesome product reviews. I am not the best when it comes to video, so this is not the first time something like this has happened. But I guess it just gives me a double workout…right?!

Nina B Roze Feminine Active Apparel

27 Feb

Image

Around Valentines Day Nina B Roze reached out to me about her Heart Butt Yoga leggings. These leggings have gotten so much press and attention, and I can see why! I’d love to have a heart on my butt :)

Nina’s collection is located out of LA and is inspired by the Victorian era, unique details and the modern woman. They make their apparel functional for an athlete and elegant enough to wear out. I looked through their apparel and really fell in love with the style of The Sports Yoga Top that I am wearing below.

Image

The top was a bit funny to get on at first. I bet most people do not have this problem, I just get confused when there is more than one hole (in a shirt!!) Ew, come on guys!

Anyway, It was SUPER cute when it was on. I love the lace cap sleeves and the back, OMG the back. So sexy, and I felt special in it.

Although I am in love with the design and the look I am not so much in love with the material. I am into super soft clothes that feel amazing on my skin. The Sports Yoga Top felt a little like a thick bathing suit (just a little more loose). Sometimes that material is NOT forgiving. Just something to keep in mind. I would still wear this top, but would be selective during which activities I wear it.

I do not doubt that when I wear this to the gym it will get a lot of attention.

Below I asked Nina some questions so that we can get to know a little more about her and her brand. Check it out!

USE PROMO CODE MYHBL20 for 20% off the entire shop!

What material are your clothes made out of?

  • We use an array of fabrics that compliment the body and keep it cool. For tops we use spandex, poly knits, mesh and open lace that allows your skin to breathe during different activities. Bottoms we chose moisture management fabrics such as dryflex made from polymide that dry quickly on the body.

Why do you think they are good for working out? Or how are they different?

  • The clothes have a great fit and move with the body. Recently, I had a yoga instructor tell me “It feels like I’m wearing nothing”. Which supports the purpose of a better workout. The clothes are unique because they’re versatile. Women will wear our pieces for pilates, barre classes, gym or yoga, while others will wear them wearing errands, lounging around the house and even going out for dinner. The idea is create beautiful pieces that can be worn everywhere!

What inspires you?

  • I love transformation. In my eyes, when I look at a woman, I automatically envision in her something I designed or about to design. My inspiration comes from yoga studios, gym floors and seeing women on the street. I take this essence and collaborate it with Victorian era, unique embellishments and mixing fabrics that allows me to create functional, yet beautiful clothing. I love incorporating feminine details that have an elegant look when you want to go out, yet keeping the construction and functionality for working out.

When and how did you start designing clothes?

  • I have been designing clothes all my life. My official moment of design happened when my parents left me in my room with a needle, fabric and my tiny Barbie at the age of 7. It was that day, I hand-sewed a yellow dress with beaded embellishment at the hem. After that, came many different Barbie outfits of sailors, unique gowns, and party dresses that were all photographed in-front of a backdrop I had painted. My serious approach to design was when I got accepted to Otis College of Art & Design, where I learned the process of designing a garment, a collection, draping and pattern-making, tailoring and so much more. The techniques of design I still use today.

Do you work out? If yes, what is your favorite activity?

  • I love to work out! I think it’s the most incredible thing you can do for your body. I enjoy running, lifting weights and taking Hot power fusion yoga. On occasion I will indulge in a barre class, to remind myself of my teenage years when I was a ballerina.

Thank you Nina B Roze for sharing your beautiful fitness apparel with us! I hope to see more beautiful designs in the future!

Bar III and my LOUD voice

15 Feb

I had time yesterday between a client and class so I thought I would do a little shopping…whoops!

I went in to Macy’s for the first time in a long time and came across a brand called Bar III. Has anyone ever heard of this? I found such cute stuff, and just my luck they were having crazy sales! I really love Bar III’s clothes and am so excited to have discovered them.

Here is a top I got. French Row Top. SO SO SO soft. I got one for my mom too! It’s on SALE!

Image

I wanted to share Bare III with you because some of their stuff is super comfy, things I can totally picture myself going to class in! And I am always on the lookout for cute clothes than can be worn in the studio and out. They have fun dresses too!

Some “cute for studio” and also for street tops:

Slub knit

Long sleeve striped ruched Might need to get that one!

High low

baseball Tee

And how awesome is this top!

Also I wanted to talk about the fact that I know I have a SUPER loud voice. Even when I try to whisper it comes out as a yell.  People have commented on my YouTube videos that my voice is too loud:

“Too LOUD !!!!PLEASE DONT SCREAM ! such a good girl and nice things, dont spoil! Thank you !”

“You are WAY too loud and hyper though I do love the content.”

Even though I find the comments funny, I do have to agree. I have to turn the volume down when I watch my own videos. I can not help my “hyperness” or my crazy energy, but I think I can help the volume of my videos. I am going to look in to a wireless microphone and I hope that will make the difference.

Are your triceps feeling jiggly?

26 Dec

photo (11)

It always happens. The time between Christmas and New Years where people start to slack at the gym. My class numbers slow down and then BOOM come the New Year the number of students in my classes sky rocket and people are back at it. I myself have been eating more “sweets” than normal, and my workout schedule has been all over the place… so really no schedule. This is partly due to the fact that a lot of my classes have been cancelled due to the holiday and new year.

I just got back from lunch with my mom and future sister in law. I got a salad nicoise, actually one of the best salad nicoise I have ever had. And then we split the masterpiece featured above. We didn’t even know where to start! It was huge, so we didn’t end up finishing it, but it was good. It was filled with vanilla and raspberry ice cream and some kind of vanilla cakey stuff.  I also had a cup of peppermint tea. YUM.

Here is a video to get you back into the groove. Lets target those triceps, and get rid of the jiggle in time for the new year. On Friday I will be posting a full body workout to get you ready for your New Years little black dress!

Inner thigh and Hip slimming video!

29 Nov

I recently became a solow ambassador!! I am a wearing a lovely outfit by them in the video below. I have always been obsessed with their clothes, and now I love that they are branching out and doing more “fitness” type clothing. Comfortable, so flattering, and SO cute with a fun edge! They have the perfect apparel for wearing in and out of the gym!

Reebok Headquarters Cardio Dance Fusion Class

16 Nov

Yesterday I made my way to the Reebok Headquarters to lead the HR team through a cardio dance fusion class for their annual meeting. The class was held in the Crossfit gym where we had a great sound system and ample room to move around. I was so pleased with the group! They were awesome and totally rocked it. They laughed and sweat the whole time and were the perfect display of what I wish for in a dance class. Laid back fun people who love to sweat!

Whenever I go to the Reebok headquarters I always make sure I have time to shop! I bought some cool studded sneakers called “Princess” from the Alicia Keys line.

What do you think?? Today I am off to NYC with my mom for a dress fitting!!

Oh and check out these ones too! I saw my Equinox boss wearing them a few days ago. They are so fun… Alicia Keys as well.

Sometimes it’s more fun working out with a buddy

29 Oct

It’s a rare opportunity when my fiance lets me “Work him out”. I usually hear him say “no, I have soccer tomorrow”  or “no, I went to the gym yesterday” or just plain old “not a chance”. So on the VERY FEW AND RARE occasions that he says “YES” I get so excited I could pee myself!

Yesterday was one of those “YES” days. So I set up two mats, took out some light weights for arms and back. and grabbed a kickball for abs. Most of the exercises I put him through I modified for myself. We did a lot of plank and push up variations. I made sure to throw in some back work to even us out. The workout was under 25 minutes and we were both sweaty! It was so much fun.. for me at least!

I find that working out with someone can be motivating and just more fun. I once worked out with a friend who is also a trainer. We set out two mats and I put her through an exercise and she put me through one. We did this for about 30 minutes back and fourth. We both learned some new moves and the workout flew by! Try it and let me know how it goes. Instead of a dinner date, it can be a workout date! YEAH?! OR workout while dinner is cooking! HOLLA.

Here is an old workout video we did together.  I plan to do another video demonstrating what we did yesterday, because it was amazing. I am sore from it today!

OPEN hip flexors = TIGHT butt

23 Oct

Not seeing the results you want from all that butt work you have been doing? Your tight hip flexors might be getting in your way.

The Hip flexor stretch is my favorite. Tight hips affect many of us, either from a long day of sitting at work, a long commute, or just overuse.  We tend to use our hips and activate them even when they are not needed.  Your butt and hip flexors are opposing muscles. Having an open hip flexor muscle not only feels great, but it can also help your butt muscles get tighter and help wake them up a little.  And who doesn’t want a butt that’s awake?!

Try this stretch and then pair it with the butt workout below!

After your hips are nice and open make sure you do some butt work. Open your hips then tighten your butt!
