Review: Tieks by Gavrieli

21 Dec

Tieks \\, noun, (usually functioning as plural).

Fashionable, full-time flats that fold to fit in a small purse.

I  always notice ballet flats and I am in constant search for a comfortable and stylish pair. I first noticed Tieks when one of my personal training clients was wearing them. She was rocking the camel colored Tieks, which created a really cool leg lengthening effect.  During class about a month later, I noticed that a student had a pair of Tieks lying next to her mat. In the middle of teaching class I said “NICE TIEKS!”  She looked at me and smiled and after class we got to talking and I found out she has a major connection to one of the main masterminds behind Tieks! And that is where it all started.

Tieks sent me a pair of cobalt blue ballet flats. They arrived in a wonderful Tiffany blue package. I was in love with the presentation and was crossing my fingers for the actual shoe to be just as good.

The first thing I did was smell the flats. Yeah, I don’t know why, but I did. They smelled like wonderful leather. Tieks are made of 100% premium, soft, top-grain leather.

Things that stood out from these flats compared to others:

  1. I felt SUPPORT! The soles of my feet were never sore.  Tieks provide a good amount of padding so you never feel your feet pounding the pavement.  I also really enjoyed teaching in them. The comfort of the shoe allows me to walk around during class as the split sole feature gives me the flexibility to demonstrate movements easily.
  2. The soles of some of my other ballet flats have become slightly detached from the shoe. I am not sure how Tieks soles are attached, but they are sturdy and not going anywhere.
  3.  The price point of Tieks are higher than other flats I have purchased. In this situation the price point of the shoe directly correlates to the quality. I am so impressed by all aspects, but can see how someone would think twice just by looking at the price. Once the shoe is on your foot, though, all questions will go out the window. You will love them!

When you put Tieks on your feet they feel like heaven! I was REALLY trying to find an area of the shoe that isn’t comfortable or is itchy and rough. But I couldn’t find one! I walked around my apartment in them. I walked around the city in them. I walked around class. They are truly genius. They fold up easily, you can throw them in your bag and feel beautiful all along the way.

What are your favorite flats? Have you ever tried Tieks?

These seem really great! Glad you’re enjoying them. The price has held me back from buying them. I’m a big fan of the Nude Lace, priced at $235. I just can’t imagine paying that much for a pair of flats. I put money into beautiful heels and boots, but my flats are my quick go-to and beat up shoe.

YES! the Nude Lace is beautiful. I totally hear what you are saying and the boots and heels though :)

Is it good for wide feet? That’s what keeps me away from flats in general. They never have them in wide width…

    • Christie March 10, 2013 at 5:08 pm #

Yes. I have wide feet and this is the ONLY shoe that I can fit in comfortably. I *LOVE* them!

Does the shoe rub on the back of your ankle? A huge problem I seem to have with flats is that the back of the shoe rubs the back of my ankle and is very uncomfortable at times.

    • lhefez June 5, 2012 at 10:10 pm #

Erica- great question and I have to say NOT AT ALL! I walked miles in these shoes and nothing has ever rubbed me the wrong way (no pun intended) IT has a bit of padding near the back of the ankle so its perfect :) Hope this helps

my daughter is touring japan for 2 weeks in august and needs a good pair of city walking shoes- what does anyone think about these shoes for this purpose?

    • lhefez July 25, 2012 at 8:57 am #

Pamela- they are the most comfortable flats I have worn! Good walking shoes. As for support sneakers would be best, but Tieks are really great.

I got my first pair several months ago, and have gotten several more since. Seems exhorbitant, but these are the only flat shoes I can wear without grimacing in pain. I’ve got big ole size 11W Hobbit feet, so I got a 12 in these, and they’re perfect. And they make my feet look downright normal and well proportioned! They are NOT like any other flats, they are like walking barefoot because the sole is so flexible, they’re not forcing your feet to lay flat. So if you have (high) arch issues like I do, they don’t bother you at all. Pretty much the entire seam on the top of the shoe is elasticized, but just enough to lay on your foot without pinching, so I have no problems with blisters or rubbing on my toes or heels. I would totally recommend just getting one basic pair in a neutral color that goes with everything, you won’t regret it. And if you get them, try them on, and decide they’re not worth it, they offer free shipping both ways.

      Great review Yvonne! Thank you!

My feet are wide and flat (no arch). I’m extremely interested as I’m a teacher and standing on concrete all day, every day. I’m really interested to know if they’d fit my foot though. Expensive, but I’ll pay for quality!

I am also a teacher (well, phd student/teacher) and have wide, flat feet, and tieks are a godsent! I must say, besides running shoes, they are the most expense shoes that I have ever bought, so I was nervous, but they are so so worth it. I should preface my comments with the fact that i have awful, horrible feet. I wear size 10 or 11, wide or extra-wide, and have no arches. I compete in triathlons, so I have medical orthopedic inserts for my running shoes, but walking around our college campus in “nice” shoes causes me so much pain. But, I recently bought my first two pairs of tieks (matte black and chocolate brown), and I am in love! My feet have never been so comfortable! I ordered size 11, and I have had no bleeding heals (aka no painful “break in the shoes” process), no bunion pain (yes, I just turned 30 and my super wide feet have had bunions since middle school–thank you genetics and cheap plastic shoes!), AND my arches do not ache while wearing these shoes! Overall, my feet in these shoes feel so natural that it is as if i am walking around barefoot. I couldn’t be happier! My theory is that the flexible sole and leather makes these shoes much much more comfortable than your average or advanced (sorry hush puppies) hard sole, fake leather flats. I haven’t needed to carry them folded as a spare set of shoes yet, but I am looking forward to doing so with my handy bag and pouch. Also, I travel a lot in the summer (I am an archaeologist), so I am also really looking forward to packing these shoes! I will save so much space! Where have these been all my life? They could have saved me so much money and pain from horrid, ill-fitting shoes!

Does the bunion” stick out” in these shoes? Mine are so bad it seems like the flats would accentuate that part of my foot. :(

        • lhefez May 18, 2013 at 2:49 am #

          I am not sure ;( I’m sorry!

I have a question…I wear a 6.5 I have no idea what size to get. I am spot on 6.5…I would hate to get them and they didn’t fit. Any advice would be good. Also were you impressed with the cobalt, I am torn between that color and the nude and or plain black pair. Thank you :)

I’ve been researching comfortable flats and discovered Tieks, but I’ve read some mixed reviews regarding their arch support. I have to have an incredibly comfortable shoe for standing/walking all day in the hospital- what is your view on the ability to wear these shoes for >12 hours? How is the arch support?

    • lhefez January 23, 2013 at 8:59 am #

I feel like in most flats arch support is not great. With that said, I do find these to be very comfortable, but the sole is not super thick as to give you a tun of arch support. Maybe you could stick an insert in the shoe?

My frist pair of Tieks came in the mail yesterday and I was soooo happy with them. I spent the rest of the day smiling and just loving my new shoes! I wore them today and they’re great. They were pretty expensive — I’ve never spent that much on flats– but I really love them and am definitely going to get another pair once spring rolls around. I have an awful time finding flats that fit right and are comfortable– but these did the job! Try emailing service@tieks.com and they might just give you a discount! (I asked if they had any promotions going on and they sent me a discount code!) P.S. I got black matte Tieks. AMAZING.

I was wondering if you knew where I could locate a captcha plugin for my comment
form? I’m using the same blog platform as yours and I’m
